Stillwater City Jail Transition

The City of Stillwater announced on March 19, 2026 that it would contract with Payne County for jail services beginning July 1, 2026 and close the city jail. The official notice said the agreement improves operational efficiency, reduces duplication of services, and uses existing county resources. Police Chief Chris Hassig described it as a practical extension of collaboration with Payne County, and Sheriff Joe Harper said centralizing jail services streamlines operations and improves use of public resources.

For pages published after July 1, 2026, Stillwater municipal arrestee custody should route to the Payne County Detention Center and the Payne County roster. Before that effective date, historical references to a Stillwater city jail may still matter. The key is not to imply that a separate Stillwater jail roster remains the long-term custody lookup channel after the city closes the jail.

The notice makes Payne County the proper current-custody route for Stillwater arrests after the transition date.

Look Up Stillwater Arrestees

For current custody after the transition, search the Payne County inmate roster. Stillwater municipal arrestees who remain in custody are handled through Payne County jail services after booking or transfer. If the person does not appear on the roster, check whether the booking is too recent, whether release already occurred, whether VINE has a custody status entry, or whether a court case has been filed.

3. Open the inmate profile to confirm booking date, charge text, and photo status.

6. Use city records only for municipal context, not current county jail housing after transfer.

The Stillwater transition affects local custody routing. It does not change how state prison, federal, or ICE custody is searched. Those systems still use ODOC, BOP, ICE, or facility contact.

Keep the reason for contact clear: city operational questions go to the city, while current jail custody, release, bond timing, and inmate records go to Payne County.

Stillwater Custody on Payne Roster

The Payne County roster is the current-custody search for the Payne County Detention Center. After the Stillwater city jail closure, a Stillwater arrest that results in continued custody should route to that county system. The roster can show booking date, charge text, profile link, photo status, and basic demographics. It may not show bond amount, court date, housing unit, or final case outcome.

For a recent arrest not yet listed, the sheriff page says the system may be updating. VINE and the sheriff phone line are the safest fallbacks for custody status.

Stillwater Booking and Bond

Once a Stillwater arrestee is in Payne County custody, the same county jail booking and bond facts apply. Jail staff record identity, booking date and time, charge text, demographic fields, and photo status. The jail FAQ says that on weekends and holidays the judge is typically called between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. when the courthouse is closed, and families should allow until at least 1:30 p.m. for bonds to be set.

When bond is posted, release is not instant. The FAQ says inmates are subject to a nationwide warrant check before being processed out. Released inmates exit through the West Door between 6th and 7th Street on Duncan Street. If another agency has a hold or detainer, a person may remain in custody even after a local bond issue changes.

Stillwater Records After Arrest

Current custody is only one record. After a Stillwater arrest, court records may appear in Payne County District Court if prosecutors file charges. The official 2026 notice changes how those searches should be answered going forward. It is accurate to explain the closure and contract, then route current custody to Payne County. It is not accurate to invent a separate city jail roster, capacity, visitation schedule, or commissary system that was not located in official research.

Cushing remains a separate city arrest-log source, and Cimarron remains a federal/ICE facility. Those pages serve different user intents. Stillwater's page is about transition and routing, not a standalone detention center with ongoing public jail operations after the effective date.

The transition also affects families trying to plan a visit or release pickup. Payne County's jail FAQ gives the release door, bond timing, property pickup, and warrant-check details. Stillwater's city notice gives the reason for the operational change, but it does not replace county jail instructions once a Stillwater arrestee is in county custody.
